Port Townsend First Baptist Church is located in the heart of Port Townsend on the corner of Lawrence and Fillmore Streets. We are a part of the American Baptist Church.
We love Jesus. We love each other. We love the sweet, fun, quiet, quirky, crazy, beautiful city that is Port Townsend. We love the creative, practical, artistic & hard-working people that make it so.
We love the world that God has made. We love that we’re surrounded by beaches and mountains and the waters of Admiralty Inlet. We love that we get the opportunity to serve Port Townsend.
We love the Boiler Room and the Public Library and Union Wharf and Fort Worden. And we love overseas missions. We love to laugh and play games, like musical chairs.
We love new people and friends who have fellowshipped with us their entire life.
Our Church Constitution holds the Apostles Creed as our basic statement of faith as follows:
Witnessing to our faith in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior and in the spirit of love and cooperation with all others who have likewise identified with Jesus Christ and with His body on the earth, we adopt as the basic statement of our faith the following creed:
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth: And in Jesus Christ His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy universal church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, the life everlasting. Amen.
The second article of our constitution describes the purpose of First Baptist Church this way:
As a Church which believes in God’s Word and God’s grace for all people, we purpose to promote discipleship through the Holy Spirit’s leading in all areas of our lives, including:
WORSHIP: helping people to respond to God’s love in praise and adoration, in confession and prayer and in hearing God’s Word;
PROCLAMATION: announcing the Good News of God’s love and forgiveness in Jesus Christ;
EDUCATION: enabling people of all ages to understand God and God’s ways and God’s will for their lives;
FELLOWSHIP: assisting people to live in a supportive community as they share their joys, sorrow, hopes and dreams;
SERVICE: challenging Christ’s followers to live out God’s love by serving other in their needs in the church, the community and in the mission field of the world.
Today, our shorthand for that is simply: LOVING GOD AND LOVING PORT TOWNSEND
